An evening with Micil

We were delighted to welcome Michéal O'Flaherty from Micil to Browne's Bar on Thursday 12 March and we were treated to a wonderful range of spirits from poitín to whiskey to a cream liqueur. Excellent stuff all round.

We started with two poitín expressions - the distillery's standard poitín and their heritage poitín. Both of these come with a ton of flavour with the heritage edition bringing further peatiness to the table.
Despite the reputation that poitín has - it being a far-too-strong-and-possibly-illegal spirit - the reaction from the room was very positive and not a little bit surprised.

Our next three expressions were whiskeys - the Micil Peated Single Malt Triple Sherry Cask finish, the Peated Heritage Irish whiskey and the Peated single pot still Irish whiskey. Three superb expressions with just the right level of peat and a nice level of ABV (50%). We were spoiled with these three.

To wrap up, we enjoyed Micil's poitín-based cream liqueur which was a fantastic way to finish the evening.
Micil was a brand that had relatively little exposure in our club but it's fair to say that Michéal did a wonderful job in educating and entertaining us. Michéal was kind enough to talk through the distillery's history and leaned into the authenticity of the brand and the passion in the distillery for the Irish language, the use of peat and the links to the past. I visited the distillery some years ago and that same passion was evident from owner Pádraic during the tour - which is well worth the visit.
There will be many bottles of Micil heading to Gorey addresses in the near future!
